Care Instructions
All of the merchandise in our shop is handmade of natural materials and many of our textiles have been given a second life. To keep you newly purchased threads looking and feeling their best, we've provided a few recommendations for caring for and laundering your new purchase.
Silk
To properly care for silk, hand-wash items in cold water using a gentle detergent designed for silk or delicates. Avoid high heat and harsh detergents, as they can damage the fabric. Never use chlorine bleach, fabric softeners, or put silk in the dryer. When ironing, use a low heat setting and a pressing cloth between the iron and the silk.
Washing Silk:
- Hand or machine wash: Use cold water and a gentle, neutral detergent. If machine washing use the gentle cycle.
- Avoid hot water and chlorine bleach as they can damage the silk fibers.
- Separate colors: Wash colors separately (separate lights from darks, etc.)
- No fabric softeners: They can leave a residue that silk doesn't like.
- To keep you silk silky: Make sure that nothing with studs or zippers goes in the washing machine with your new silk garment as it could result in snagging.
- Hint: if you hang your silk immediately after wearing, you will probably be able to get several wears out of it before needing to wash. Clothes last longer when they're laundered as-needed instead of after each wear (note: this does not apply to teenage boys - if you've got one you know what I'm talking about).
Drying Silk
- Hang or lay flat to dry: Avoid the dryer, as heat can damage or shrink silk.
- Hint: Rolling your garment in a towel will help remove excess moisture and help it to dry faster.
Ironing Silk
- Low heat setting: Use the lowest heat setting or the silk setting on your iron.
- Use a pressing cloth: Place a clean cloth between the iron and the silk to protect the fabric from heat damage.
- Iron when slightly damp: Don't iron silk while its wet.
- Steam: Use a steamer at a low heat setting and keep an inch or two from the fabric while using.
Kantha Cotton
Our kantha cotton products include quilts, and clothing. These pieces have been made of repurposed cotton saris and hand stitched together with straight-stitches. While you should treat your new purchase well, these products are generally not considered delicate and may be machine washed similar to other cotton products.
Washing
- Machine wash: Cotton Kantha quilts (and clothing) are machine washable. We recommend that you use cold water and a gentle cycle.
- Handwashing: If you'd like to give your new Kantha some extra TLC, hand wash in cold water with mild detergent. A washing tub, bathtub or large sink all work well for handwashing Kantha quilts.
- Avoid bleach: Kantha quilts do not like bleach.
Drying
- Air dry: Hang drying is recommended for the best care.
- Machine: You may tumble dry on low, using a low heat setting.
- Dry cleaning: Dry cleaning is an option, though not necessary. If you'd like your product dry cleaned, search for eco-friendly drycleaners in your area.
That's it folks! We hope you love your new purchase as much as we've enjoyed curating this little shop :) Take a photo of your new threads and tag us on social media. We'd love to see you!
